Macau Grand Prix Announces Six-Day Spectacular
To Mark Diamond Jubilee Celebrations
The Macau Grand Prix Committee (CGPM) today announced an unprecedented programme for two weekends of racing to celebrate the 60th running of the legendary event. Dates for the 60th Macau Grand Prix are: November 9th and 10th, and November 14th to 17th.
The second weekend, running from Thursday, November 14th through to Sunday, November 17th, will once again include the three prestigious headline races: The Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix, the official FIA Formula 3 Intercontinental Cup; the final rounds of the FIA World Touring Car Championship for the ninth successive year; and the 47th running of the unique and celebrated Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix.
The Macau GT Cup which, in just five years, has become firmly established as an important international sportscar invitational, attracting both prestigious automotive marques and star drivers, is joined by the Macau Road Sport Challenge for modified road cars.
New to the programme for the Diamond Jubilee celebrations are the Lotus Greater China Race and the Master Challenge. The Lotus Greater China Race is a one-make invitational race, featuring a special limited edition LOTUS Elise 1.6 Club Racer for drivers from Mainland China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Macau and Asia.
The Master Challenge will see some of the Macau Grand Prix’s best known former competitors and Asia’s most successful drivers compete in one-make Volkswagen Scirocco R racing cars, the same model used in the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup China Series.
The weekend of November 9th and 10th will feature six races on the legendary 6.2 km Guia street circuit, and a programme which includes something for every racing fan.
The Macau Touring Car Cup for up to 36 of Asia’s leading tin-top competitors and the MAC/HKG Interport Race, the annual showdown between the neighbouring cities, are joined by three sportscar races which will showcase a trio of iconic marques, and include some of the region’s biggest names in GT competition: The Audi R8 LMS Cup, the first ever one-make cup for Audi worldwide which made its debut last year; the Lamborghini Super Trofeo, the only one make series using a permanent four-wheel drive car based on a lightweight version of the successful Gallardo 570-4 and specifically reworked for the use on the race track; and the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, which returns to the Guia Circuit for the first time since 2007 and this year celebrates 10 years at the pinnacle of GT racing in the region.
Continuing its rich heritage of providing an international showcase for emerging young talent, the Formula Masters China Series will make its debut at Macau. The junior single-seater series for fledgling talent across China and Asia opens its inaugural season next month and a season finale invitational will be held at Macau. The one-make series uses a Tatuus FA010 carbon composite monocoque chassis, FIA F3 standard, powered by a Formula Evo 2.0 FSI engine from Volkswagen Group.
Away from the race track, the dynamic city of Macau will celebrate its Grand Prix’s Diamond Jubilee in grand style, with two weeks of city-wide celebrations including shows, parades, an international fireworks contest, and its famous cosmopolitan food festival.
The 60th Macau Grand Prix will be promoted globally, with the Macau Government Tourist Office and the Macau Grand Prix Committee ensuring it plays a starring role in trade and consumer travel shows, roadshows, and travelling exhibitions. Following a complete redesign, the official website at
www.macau.grandprix.gov.mo will be launched ahead of the event, while commercials will run on all major international television stations. A set of stamps and a book commemorating the rich history of the Grand Prix will be published to mark the 60th edition.
Major infrastructure projects are underway too, with a new Race Control Tower to be completed in time for November’s Grand Prix as part of a major scheme to construct new facilities in response to the increasing stature of the race meeting and the resulting logistical requirements. The project will be executed in two phases, with the existing Grand Prix Building, built in 1993, replaced in time for the 2014 event.
For this celebrated carnival of motorsport, where no fewer than eight future Formula 1 World Champions cut their teeth on their way up the international motorsport ladder, there is no better way to celebrate its Diamond Jubilee than with a Macau Grand Prix like no other.
